Obstacles as Opportunities

It's all how you look at it: obstacle or opportunity?

It's all how you look at it: obstacle or opportunity?

I have been blessed by many serendipitous events in my life, especially since my cancer diagnosis. Meeting Nevine yesterday was one of them.

Wednesdays I go to the Wellness Community to a class called Healthy Steps. I think I’ve talked about the instructor Sally, who shares my belief in positive, healing energy and the law of attraction. I noticed a new woman standing beside me who mentioned that parsley has been shown to fight cancer. I felt compelled to talk to her.

I found out  in many ways, Nevine and I have lived parallel lives. We were both diagnosed with breast cancer around the same time. We even had our recurrences around the same time and in the same spots. She goes to the same doctor and gets chemo on the same day as me. Nevine also has a blog where she shares her experiences. Most extraordinarily, we share the same philosophy that cancer has brought many gifts, such as a deeper connection with God and an opportunity to transform our lives.

Nevine shared how she believes cancer is only a temporary condition and, it is only a matter of time before this “foreign invader” leaves her body. Like me, she is a fan of Joel Osteen, who often tells how his mother Dody healed from terminal cancer in 1981 because of her faith and determination.

We both see the obstacle of cancer as an opportunity. I feel like I’ve met my new “partner in crime.”  Next week we’re planning on going to a great middle eastern restaurant Nevine recommends. They have great tabouli … and you know what they say about parsley.

  1. Sally says:

serendipitous – what a great word to describe the oh so many great things that we attract to our lives. In listening to the two of you talking on Wednesday, it occurred to me (again) how in this universe there is NO coincidence. Both of you were drawn to each other by your remarkable positive energy and determination. It was empowering listening to the two of you, both having had several recurrences, yet neither of you “giving in” to it; simply acknowledging the situation and moving on. What an inspiration to us all! Thank you.
