Sugar feeds cancer cells

Ahhh sugar!

Ahhh sugar!

I’ve been holding back on this topic because there are so many sugar lovers out there. I’m a former addict – er lover – myself, but I think it’s important. And with our kids’ Halloween candy calling to us, I think it’s timely.

Sugar isn’t good for any of us, especially if you’re a cancer survivor. I didn’t believe it at first either – until my cancer came back. One convincing fact: my PET scans detect cancer by finding hot spots of sugar (radioactive glucose) feeding cells in the body.

But you won’t hear this from most physicians. Researchers at the University of Auckland are even working on a “medical dessert” to combat chemo side effects. Participants in a trial have been eating a 100 gram tub of the strawberry ice cream each day.

Dr. Gary Huber, who recently guest-blogged on green tea, lays it out in his free e-book, Breast Health, 25 Way an Empowered Woman Takes Control (available at www.healthyalterego.com):

Sugar and insulin feed cancer cells. Cancer cells shout with glee at the sight of sugar in the diet. Studies have shown that estrogen responsive cancer cells can easily be deprived of estrogen and be fed insulin instead and they love it. So where is the sugar in your diet? It may be soda and candy but for the majority of us it lives in the form of bread, rice, pasta and potato. That’s right; those starchy high carbohydrate nuggets of joy are leading you right to diabetes and opening the door to cancer growth. Remember “Concept #1”: we all have cancer cells right now. Are you feeding them or starving them?

Sugar will suppress your immune system. Studies show that a bolus of sugar will reduce the activity of lymphocytes and macrophages leaving you vulnerable. If your breakfast is cereal and toast (sugar), your lunch is a bread sandwich and chips (sugar and carbs) and dinner contains a potato or pasta (sugar) then you suppressing your immune cells all day long and cancer cells love that environment. Insulin is the surest way to age fast and die from some degenerative disease such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer.

Another good source of information about the topic is the book, Beating Cancer with Nutrition,by Patrick Quillin, PhD, RD, CNS.

How did I beat my sugar addiction? Every time I salivated over a piece of cake or candy, I’d repeat this mantra: “Sugar feeds cancer cells.” Now when something looks good to me, I taste it and it seems too sweet. Amazing huh? It doesn’t work so well on white bread and potatoes, but I’ve greatly reduced my intake of these foods, as well. I still eat my beloved 70 percent or higher dark chocolate, but I’m no longer a slave to my daughter’s Halloween pile.

Thanks for this, Tami. I remember seeing the bowls of candy on the recpetion desk every time my sister went for chemo. There is such a disconnect, isn’t there?

Keep up the great work and boot those cancer cells out in the process!

I am absolutely amazed by this. I never knew, but will also be the first to admit that I don’t know much about cancer. (and pray I never have to).

Thank you (and Bless you) for taking your struggle and using it like this to not only inform others but to also be a place for others in your situation to turn to.

    Prayers are with you.

Thanks for your comments! I did want to mention some healthy sugar alternatives that are low glycemic: stevia and agave nectar. I use the stevia in my green tea and agave is a great syrup substitute on french (sprouted wheat) toast. I just use very little so I don’t reactivate my sweet tooth. Fruit (I choose organic) is a great dessert, especially berries, which are high in antioxidants. I”ll post more about this later.
