Good news on the medical science front …

It sounds pretty promising!
In my last post, I talked about wanting to focus more on the spiritual rather than medical science. Of course, that doesn’t mean that I ignore medical treatments. And there’s something to be said about good news!
This month, I’ve seen some promising updates coming from the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. They’ve had this conference for 32 years, so it’s about time there is some real groundbreaking things coming out of it.
A recent article explained how cancer drugs and radiation target and kill fast-growing cancer cells, but about 1-5 percent of the cells survive. These non-cancerous “mother cells” then can manufacture more cancer cells.
Houston researchers are now studying an experimental drug called gamma-secretase inhibitor that stops these “mother *!%&ers” (hee, hee) in breast cancers. It appears they have identified a vulnerable target on the stem cells and combined the drug with docetaxel, a common chemo drug, in a small group of women with advanced breast cancer.
It showed dramatic results, and they are planning larger human studies. They say that proving the effectiveness will be challenging though, because it doesn’t shrink tumors immediately. Still, I found this very hopeful! It seems that scientists are really on to something.
When I went to Indianapolis for my second opinion, the doctor there told us there are about 200 breast cancer drugs being studied now. I think it’s just a matter of time before a cure or something close to it comes out. In the meantime, I’m doing what I can on the holistic front and let God do the rest.

Here’s hoping. It would certainly be wonderful.

Great news – and isn’t it interesting that they call them “mother” cells and not “parent” cells? Women still getting the negative slant, but why am I not surprised?
